The Opportunity

Our client, who is a leading developer / contractor and operator specialising in large residential schemes, including high-rise private residential, student accommodation, luxury retirement living apartments etc. With a commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, they are dedicated to delivering projects that not only meet the highest standards of quality but also minimise their environmental impact. They are seeking a skilled Environmental and Sustainability Advisor to join their SHEQ  team, and support their mission of sustainable construction practices.

The Role

As Environmental and Sustainability Advisor reporting to the SHEQ Manager, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that construction projects adhere to environmental regulations and sustainability standards. You will collaborate closely with project teams to implement strategies that reduce the company carbon footprint, minimise waste, and promote environmentally friendly practices throughout all phases of construction.

Responsibilities:

Develop and implement environmental and sustainability policies, procedures, and strategies for construction projects.

Conduct environmental assessments and audits to identify potential risks and opportunities for improvement.

Provide guidance and support to project teams on environmental regulations, standards, and best practices.

Collaborate with architects, engineers, and contractors to integrate sustainable design principles into project plans.

Monitor and evaluate the environmental performance of construction activities, and recommend corrective actions as needed.

Manage environmental permits and approvals, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to source environmentally friendly materials and products.

Track and report on key sustainability metrics, including energy consumption, water usage, and waste generation.

Engage with stakeholders, including local communities and regulatory agencies, to address environmental concerns and build positive relationships.

Stay informed about industry trends and developments in environmental sustainability and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related field.

At least 2 years of experience in environmental management or sustainability roles within the construction industry.

Strong understanding of UK environmental regulations, standards, and legislation.

Knowledge of green building practices, certification programs (e.g., BREEAM), and sustainable construction materials.

Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to assess complex environmental issues and develop practical solutions.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Proven project management abilities, with the capacity to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.

Certification in environmental management (e.g., CEnv, IEMA) is desirable.

Experience with environmental impact assessments and environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001) is a plus.

Passion for environmental sustainability and a commitment to promoting sustainable practices within the construction industry.
